The Meaning of a Message

When you think about your story, what do you feel compelled to share most as an introduction? Is it a general synopsis, background information on characters, how the idea came to you, or simply what the book focuses on? For many authors, their focus is on the story itself and how the events or themes within shape the overall narrative. It makes sense, but there is one key element missing: the story’s message.

Sure, all of the story details matter, but when it comes to capturing the essence of your book, the overarching message reveals its heartbeatwhat resonates with people and persuades them to read it. If someone were to ask you what the message of your story is, can you confidently answer? If not, I’m here to help with some friendly motivation for inspiration!

Like choosing your title, finding your book’s message is an important part of the publishing process. Your title is the first thing that grabs a reader’s attention, but the message is what ultimately pulls them in and gets them turning the pages. It is not complicated in the sense that the message needs to be detailed or extravagantsometimes all it takes is a couple of words. But it can be complicated if you try to find the perfect message rather than the one that is authentic. No one knows your story better than you, so ask yourself the questions readers will need answers for to connect with your writing. What inspired you to write the book, and what is the one thing you want readers to take from reading your story?

An effective message is both concise and impactful. It is easy to understand and even harder to forget. There are a plethora of examples to consider, but to keep it concise and impactful, think about a widely popular children’s book like Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. The heartwarming novel is a reminder to cherish the small things in life, like a good friend, because they are the big things after all in our fleeting journeys.

Your message should evoke an emotional or thoughtful response that will strike a chord with readers who in turn are more likely to relate to the story. Of course you want them to remember the story itself, but if you have a strong message, the remembrance of your book will naturally fall into place. While it may not come to you automatically, the message is there and has always beenwaiting for you to share it with eager, curious readers.

Some of the beauty in finding your message is that it allows you to reconnect with your own story and fall in love with parts of it you may have overlooked before, perhaps even downplayed its significance. However, going through the process of identifying your message gives you a new perspective and appreciation for your hard work. In the long run, it will also give your readers a deeper attachment to your story because the message amplifies what is special about it.
