Genres: What’s Trending

You think you have an idea for a booka great idea for a book even. You hesitate, though, because you are not sure how readers in 2025 would receive your idea. Trends are always evolving, and with so much already on your plate, keeping up with what is popular might seem like a daunting or intimidating task. The good news? It is possible to engage with current trends while remaining authentic to your vision.

What are the most popular genres? Romance has stolen and warmed hearts for centuries, and it still ranks high among the most beloved genres of books. Who can resist a classic love story? Add in the rising popularity of rom-com and readers are jumping at the opportunity to check out what your story has to offer. Mystery and thriller titles are on many to-read lists as well–long-time favorites of readers who crave a healthy dose of tantalizing suspense. Fantasy and young adult genres are increasingly gaining traction, and who could forget the wonder and excitement of a children’s book? These genres have stood the test of time and continue to attract readers across the globe. But new trends are continuously emerging and with it, writers are being encouraged to try them out.

There are many rising genres we could focus on, but here is just a few that are picking up stem:

  1. Memoirs and autobiographies

In a society that is heavily influenced by what is seen on social media, more people are craving authenticity and human connection. Societal expectations are sometimes exacerbated by social media or other forms of entertainment. Reading real, true-life experiences are an excellent way for people to get in touch with life beyond a phone or computer screen. Most of us want to know more about other people and where they came from and what shaped them into who they are today. Memoirs and autobiographies invite us into the writer’s space and connect us on a more personal level.

  1. Motivational and wellness

Everyone needs some inspiration from time to time, especially if we factor the burnt out that social media can cause. More time away from the computer or television is an opportunity for self-reflection and growth. Books that center around healing and uplifting messages are in-demand because people are seeking resources that promote a healthier mind, body, and spirit.

  1. Blended genres

Choosing the genre of your next read is getting much easier with many authors opting to blend multiple genres in their story. If you like mysteries, thrillers, and romance novels, you can get all three in one book on the market today! This is not a new concept by any means, but the number of titles that incorporate a few genres are becoming more popular and desired by readers. Appealing to a diverse range of readers is more accessible through this route, and it is proving to be a successful marketing tactic. As the old saying goes, “the more the merrier.”

Where does that leave you? Trends, as we know, are useful tools in our publishing journeys that can help advance us to where we want to be. They are not requirements to check off before you can reach success. Figure out first what you want to write about and the genre you feel your story most aligns with and take that route. At the same time, do not feel intimidated by current trends or feel afraid to venture into unknown territory with different genres. You have the ultimate power in deciding which direction to take with your story, and the “right” reader will find their way to it regardless of any trend.
