Don't Overlook Libraries in Your Book Marketing!

When it comes to mapping out the marketing strategies for your book, libraries probably do not rank high priority. Of course, you would like your book in the hands of every eager reader, but libraries are often overlooked as an avenue in making that happen. This is not a faulty or fatal mistakeit is actually quite commonbut libraries offer invaluable rewards for both readers and authors alike that should be considered in your publishing journey.

For more than two hundred years, public libraries in the United States have provided free resources for readers of all ages. What started as a simple method for book accessibility and sharing has evolved today into a wide range of services that include technology and internet usage, educational resources that span many formats (e-books, audiobooks, and various other multimedia options), and programs designed for every reader. With thousands of public libraries across the country, the opportunity to reach new readers is both significant and inspiring.

There are countless advantages to choosing to market your book to libraries, but some may have a greater personal impact than others. Before you make the jump, you should think about what is most important to you in making your book available to libraries. Is it more accessibility to your work in general? The opportunity to connect with readers in-person through library-sponsored events? Or the ability to promote your brand in a new, more inclusive way? You could be interested in exploring library exposure for all three (and more) reasons, but once you have given it some thought, then you can begin the process of reaching out to libraries and sharing what you have to offer.

What exactly are some benefits to having your book in libraries for both reader and writer? Let’s check them out:

  1. Wider reach - As mentioned, the library is an excellent resource for those with limited access to books and other educational services. If a reader is unable to make a purchase on your book, they still have the option of checking the book out from the library as an alternative. Financial and practical burdens, like the lack of funds or  reliable transportation, is less likely to hinder someone from reading your book if they have the option to utilize a library service. This access is made even easier today with the use of e-book and audiobooks available for consumption.

  1. Increased sales - The more people who encounter and find enjoyment in your work, the more likely they are to recommend it to other readers. Libraries ensure that your books are readily obtainable for those interested in reading your work. If your book really makes an impression, it may even encourage others to purchase the book for themselves which in turn increases sales.

  1. Building connections - Libraries frequently hold events and programs aimed at promoting authors and facilitating a love for learning through reading. These events are a fantastic way to meet readers and connect with them on a more personal level. Establishing these connections with your readers allows them to respect not only your work but you as an author and professional even more, making them more likely to stay interested in what you publish next.

  1. Creditable identity - Having your book in a library could elevate your status as an author. Readers and the general public may approach your brand more seriously if they see it represented among other notable authors and work. This could give your book the boost it needs to take your success to the next level because readers view it as important enough to be a library.

  1. Educational advocacy - With many events, programs, and workshops offered at public libraries, your participation directly supports furthering education and providing opportunities for all readers. Readers and authors gain mutual respect for one another because of this, building on the important connection previously mentioned.

Public libraries have existed for hundreds of years and have long been successful in their mission to provide readers and authors with the necessary resources for optimal learning and enjoyment of reading. Your commitment to supporting them in providing these crucial resources not only advances your goals as an author but strengthens the love of reading by those receiving the gift of your work.
